ARCS 2022 Scholar Awards Dinner

Posted on Thursday, May 19, 2022

The 46th Annual ARCS Scholar Awards Dinner brought together ARCS members, donors, friends and outstanding scholars in the sciences.  The gathering at Phoenix Country Club was held on April 29, 2022.  Co-chairs Kate Thompson and Ceda Austerman did a wonderful job of putting the event together.  Beautiful floral centerpieces by Paulette Dalke made for a lovely setting. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PHOTOS

The event celebrated Achievement Rewards for College Scientists and the PhD candidates at our 3 state schools who are recipients of those awards.  This year ARCS Foundation Phoenix Chapter gave awards of $8,500 to 48 scholars. Much interest was generated by the poster presentations by the scholars before the dinner.

President, Jill Bray, welcomed everyone and gave an address where she thanked ARCS members and donors and stated that they are one and the same.  It is because of our generous membership that since 1977, we have been able to give nearly $8 million to over 1100 outstanding scholars here in Arizona.

Jill also acknowledged the long standing relationships that are formed when women join the chapter.  She likened joining ARCS Phoenix Chapter to joining the Supreme Court – it is for life.  Jill also recognized 2022 ARCS Light Dawn Carson Senger and thanked her for her the impact she has had both at the local Chapter and at the National level.

The 168 guests in attendance then had a chance to hear representatives of the graduate colleges from ASU, NAU and the U of A speak on the impact of these financial awards on student success.  Dean Carnie from the University of Arizona spoke of the unique relationship that ARCS donors have with the scholars they fund.

Jill recognized each scholar present with a certificate and a brief statement about their degree and research.  We had 44 scholars in attendance.  Kunkel Scholar, Alexis Basciano, was recognized as the first Speech and Hearing Sciences scholar from that newly approved ASU program.
