ARCS Phoenix Scholars On the Move November 2012

Posted on Thursday, November 15, 2012

ARCS Phoenix Alumni Scholar, Dr. Karyn Sutton, is a PH.D graduate of Arizona State University in Mathematics. Last December, she started a tenure track position in the Math Department at the University of Louisiana. She stays in touch with her scholar award donor, Mrs. Ralph Mattueci, who sponsored her from 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. Her latest report is, "Things are good here, but very busy. I got my first grant funded, which is a nice feather in my cap, but now I have to do what I promised!! I have funding for a graduate student, but it's so strange to think of myself as supervising a graduate student already. However, I have so many projects in the works already (this place is really surprisingly a hot bed of research activity, and especially a lot of scientists who actually want to work with mathematicians!), so I do need the help! I will probably recruit a little harder next semester for a grad student to work with me starting in the summer. We hosted a conference in the fall, and I co-organized it with another junior faculty. It was a lot of work but good experience."

Current University of Arizona Scholar, Jennifer Watson, is a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering. She recently checked in with her ARCS Phoenix scholar award donors, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Spetzler. Her latest report is "I want to let you know that a research article I wrote was published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics. I've attached the article for your reading enjoyment. I'm working on another article that I will be submitting for publication soon. Also, I'll be using ARCS travel funds to attend and present at the Biomedical Engineering Society Conference in Atlanta at the end of this month. It is a very diverse conference and may bring new opportunities for me after graduation."
