Scholar Spotlight

Posted on Sunday, November 17, 2024

Last month, the NAU site visit was held on Zoom. Four Scholars, three administrators, and the head of the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science talked with 10 Chapter members gathered at the home of Lynn Sonntag, along with several other members online. Beatrice Bock, a Woodrow Endowment and Temple Endowment Scholar, studies the relationship between plants and fungi; Colin Hubbard, a Van Denburgh Scholar, studies the physiology of respiration; Emma Lathrop, a Horejsi Charitable Foundation Scholar, studies what happens when soil thaws; and Joseph Phillips, an ARCS Scholar, investigates Earth’s tectonics within ocean basins. Laura Martin, head of University Relations for NAU, said members greatly enjoyed hearing from the students.

Afterwards, the Scholars were asked why they had chosen to participate. Beatrice said, “I was eager to engage more personally with the donors in a smaller group setting... to express my gratitude and connect with individuals whose support has such a profound impact on our lives.” Joseph added another incentive was an opportunity to learn more about his colleagues’ research.

When asked about the format of the meeting, Emma said she appreciated the small-group setting and the chance it offered to answer questions and have real dialog about her research. Colin said that although he “preferred the luncheon/lab tour conducted in past years because he likes conversing face-to-face,” nonetheless he appreciated “the chance to touch base with the amazing donors for one last time before I graduate.”
