Board Meeting Re-cap April 5, 2021

If you missed the board meeting, you missed the exciting news that we have received a gift of $100,000 from the Hostetler/Wrigley Foundation in honor of Alison Hunter Johnston.  The money will enhance the existing endowment in her honor.  Thank you to Anna Maria for all her assistance in pulling the financial records and documents requested by the donors.  Things came together easily with her help.  It is really wonderful to receive a gift like this.

ARCS National is having a Special National Board Meeting on April 14, 2021 to vote on a resolution to adopt a diversity, equity and inclusion statement.  If the resolution passes, we will discuss it as a chapter in May.  The proposed statement reads as follows:

Opening Doors to Scientific Achievement

ARCS Foundation embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values critical to scientific excellence and innovation.  We believe these core values are crucial to creating a welcoming environment within our organization.  We open doors to talented individuals who bring different perspectives to scientific research.  ARCS Foundation celebrates and supports the efforts of our partner institutions as they eliminate barriers to academic and scientific achievement.

Carolyn reported that she is starting a newsletter geared toward ARCS Alumni.  She has some scholar updates from ASU and is looking for more news from other schools.  Newsletter would be sent 1-2 times during the year.

From University Relations:

ASU – Will likely submit 2 new programs for our consideration: Audiology/Auditory Language Neuroscience and Astrophysics.  Dean of the Graduate College, Libby Wentz, will be a guest at our May 5, 2021 Annual Luncheon.

NAU – Had a scholar withdraw from her program so they are down to 8 scholars.  Nancy is working with them on some graduate student events.

U of A – Virtual site visit will be April 29, 2021 from 1:0pm – 2:00pm via zoom.  ARCS Kunkel Scholar from 2020-2021 will be the featured speaker.   Registration email will be sent soon.

Planning is underway for our Annual Scholar Awards Dinner to be held on October 8, 2021 at Paradise Valley Country Club.  The dinner will be for members and donors.  The scholars will join us in a virtual way.  The plan is to get back to our usual April dinner in 2022.

Our next meeting will be in person!  Please join us at Paradise Valley Country Club to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and another strong year for ARCS Phoenix Chapter.  Details to come from Judy and Betsy.  We will install our new Board and welcome our 3 new members, Amy Moseley, Anne Moseley Babina and Kimberly Olney.
