The ARCS Foundation Phoenix Chapter advances science and technology in the United States by providing financial awards to academically outstanding doctoral students studying to complete degrees in science, engineering and medical research. Our Chapter is proud to be playing a part in our scholars' achievements and their collective ability to contribute to our future quality of life.
As our country struggles with the questions of how to prevent and cure disease, protect our fragile planet, secure peace and economic prosperity among nations, and fully understand the nature of the universe, the implications for American science are clear. Our nation’s current needs clearly indicate that our country cannot remain competitive in the global economy of the 21st century without supporting intellectual resources.
Living in Los Angeles in an era of fascination with space exploration, those envisioning a US space program were startled by the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik in October 1957. A small Soviet satellite, in orbit around Earth at the height of the Cold War, fascinated and alarmed America. ARCS Foundation was established in 1958 with a unique vision of what America needs to remain technologically strong and internationally competitive. The ARCS Foundation is investing in the future of America by providing scholar awards to academically talented students majoring in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Medical Research.
The Phoenix Chapter was chartered in 1975 and has provided $6,625,750 to in support of 1052 outstanding graduate students attending Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and The University of Arizona. Our goal is to continue to increase the amount of funds dedicated to scholar awards.
To qualify for an ARCS scholar award, a student must have an excellent scholastic record, proven ability in a scientific field, and be a citizen of the United States.
As a requirement of membership, all members of the Phoenix Chapter pay dues and personally contribute to this program. We also solicit donations from individuals, foundations and corporations. The great advantage of a donation to ARCS is that 100% of that donation goes to scholar awards. All administrative expenses are paid from membership dues and special underwriting, and all ARCS members donate their services.
Scholar Awards are processed through the Graduate Studies departments of the universities. Scholars interested in applying for an ARCS award must contact his or her department chair and/or graduate study Dean’s office for an application. The universities select our recipients, not the Chapter
We are supporting the scientists and the researchers of today and tomorrow. Through our contacts with business, education, civic and social members of our community we inspire their participation and support of our mission.
