Phoenix Scholar Demonstrates "Heart in Hand"

Posted on Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Heart in hand… but this ARCS Scholar has nothing to apologize for! Justin Ryan Ph.D. and ARCS Scholar 2013-2015 is now a member of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital staff in Arizona.  On a recent visit, ARCS members had the pleasure of seeing one of our scholars at work!  Small but mighty, Justin’s Cardiac 3-D Print Lab allows him to model actual patient hearts in order to educate family members and doctors regarding the cardiac care for specific patients.  Justin’s expertise and impact on pediatric cardiac surgery is now being modeled in other pediatric heart centers.

When asked how his ARCS reward benefited him, Justin said, “ARCS enabled me to dedicate more time and resources to the development of this innovative lab at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. ARCS’ support also enabled me to become the research scientist I am now. Without ARCS, it is difficult to imagine the lab would have had the impact on patients and patient-families as it has had”  With regard to ARCS in general he said, “There are so many other scientists-in-training, with projects of equal or greater scope than my own lab, that would greatly benefit from the support of the growing ARCS community.”  Find out more about the lab at Cardiac3DPrintLab.com.  To find out more about ARCS Phoenix Chapter please visit www.arcsfoundation.org/phoenix.
