The 2018 ARCS Foundation All Member Conference (AMC), SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION, was held in Washington DC April 25-28. Eighteen members of the Phoenix Chapter attended.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Deborah Wince-Smith, President and CEO of The Council on Competitiveness, a coalition of CEO’s, university presidents, labor leaders and national laboratory directors, committed to driving U.S. productivity and prosperity.  Following the keynote address we were treated to an excellent panel discussion by distinguished academic leaders on how biomedical science is moving forward and what it means to our society.  On the second day of the conference we commemorated the 60th Anniversary of ARCS Foundation with a panel of former National Board Presidents who gave an overview of the founding of ARCS Foundation and how we have grown and changed over the past 6 decades.  Phoenix Chapter member and past National Board President, Nancy Spetzler (2014/2015) was a member of the panel. Following the past presidents panel, a luncheon was held honoring the 2018 Chapter ARCS Lights including our own Penny Papadopoulos.  The social highlight of the AMC was dinner at the United States Supreme Court.  Two buses of members and guests were given a police escort to the Court through rush hour traffic!  Once seated in the Chamber, we heard a very interesting talk by Justice Anthony Kennedy about his years on the bench.  Justice Kennedy’s wife, Mary, is a longtime member of the Metropolitan Washington Chapter and he is an ardent ARCS Foundation supporter. We then had dinner in the rotunda which featured menu selections from a cook book compiled of the Justices’ favorite recipes.  The “icing on the cake” was being given souvenir copies of the book at the end of the evening.
