ARCS Foundation Phoenix Awards Thirty-Eight Science Doctoral Candidates

Thirty-eight Arizona Ph.D. candidates representing Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona were honored at the annual Scholar Awards Dinner by the Phoenix Chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation, Inc.

The scholars fields include microbiology, physics, applied mathematics and cancer biology.  ARCS Foundation Phoenix shares in their goal to obtain a doctoral degree in science and/or technology.  Each awardee receives $7000.

The ARCS Foundation Inc. dates to the late 1950s and was the response of a group of California women to Sputnik.  Their goal was to encourage and support outstanding U.S. students in the study of science and technology.

There are 17 ARCS Foundation, Inc., chapters throughout the U.S.  More than $78 million in annual ARCS Foundation, Inc. awards have been presented since 1958.  The ARCS Foundation Phoenix Chapter was chartered in 1975 and has awarded almost $5 million to 820 scholars.

ARCS Scholar Alumni are making major contributions to the scientific strength and leadership of this country.  Some milestones of success: 36% of alumni have received national or international science-awards, 12.4% have registered patents, 55 % are employed in academia and 45% are in business, industry, government, medicine and research.
